January Block of the Month

January 30th, 2006 by sallad

January Mystic BluesI’m working on a Block of the Month Quilt from Joann’s.  Each month,  I complete another block, and then by the end of the year, I’ll have a full quilt completed.  I really like having the mini-goals to work on.

This quilt is called Mystic Blues and it’s a sampler for beginners and intermediates.  The pieces are already pre-cut, so I just need to sew them together.  The only problem I’ve encountered is that their cut sizes don’t match up to the final result.  I sewed them all just as recommended and it’s about an inch shorter on all sides - an 11 inch block, instead of 12 inches.

I test sewed for the makers of those kits. I remember that on some, they were ok, but most were a bit small.

If they’re all too small, then it shouldn’t be a problem, I can just add an extra border to make it the right size to fit a bed.

[...] Tonight I worked on my Block of the Month for February. This one was pretty quick and easy to put together, and it did come out to the proper size. I’ll wait to see if the others are correct, like this one, or short, like January’s, before I decide what to do about the first one being a little small. [...]

I am just finishing this quilt kit. It is my first finished full size quilt ( I enlarged mine to queen size). I really love the colors. I am just a beginning quilter and I had to learn to make a scant 1/4 ” seam. Kept the seam ripper busy a few times! Good luck and keep at it, it will come out beautiful.
