Fun Dip and TV Memories

February 4th, 2006 by sallad

Fun Dip on our tonguesThomas and I were in need of some social interaction with friends, so last night we invited a couple friends to come over for boardgames.  Nancie and Tory, and Dave and Anna joined us, and we played Balderdash and Apples to Apples.  I think Tory won both games, but we added a couple rounds to each after he won.

Nancie brought some fun foods that reminded us of elementary school days - frosted animal crackers, cupcakes, and fun dip.  I have never heard of fun dip, but basically it’s a packet of sugar and a sugar stick, and you dip the stick in the sugar, and lick it off the stick.  It turns your tongue weird colors too as you can see in the photo of Anna, Nancie, and me.

Speaking of elementary school days, my brother got the theme song from a show called H.R. Pufnstuf  stuck in my head.  I had never heard of it before this week, but it supposedly was one of his favorites in elementary school.  Now Amazon is releasing it on DVD, and he’s excited and shared a few episodes with me.  I think it was before my time.  My favorite elementary age shows were all on Nickelodeon - Double Dare, Today’s Special, You Can’t Do that on Television, and Out of Control.  My earliest memory of TV is Pinwheel.  What were your favorite elementary age shows?

    You poor thing!

    I can’t believe you’d never experienced the joy of Fun Dip as a kid! I’m glad to hear you’ve finally Shared the Love. (;

    My favorite shows to watch when I was a kid were The Muppet Show and Greatest American Hero. And on Saturdays, cartoons were on every channel, from about 7am until noon. Ahhhhh, the golden age!

    Speaking of GAH, when I was teaching anatomy a few years ago, my partner and I had been reminiscing about that show before the students arrived, talking about how we figured none of the kids today knew about such a gem of television. When it was time to open the doors, he said, “Ah, ah! No one gets in until someone sings for us the theme song to “Greatest American Hero”. They all looked at us with blank stares, and someone tried singing the GI Joe commercial. Finally, one of our older, non-trad students in the back piped up with, “Believe it or not, IIIIIIIIIII’m walkin’ on air…”

    (You know, some commercial is using that as background music, right now. I think it could be the Walt Disney World variations with the parents walking around dressed as superheroes…)

    Looks like some good wholesome fun. I’m intrigued by the different tongue shapes more than by the colors. Dallas, yours definitely looks like a tongue capable of touching your nose. The others don’t.

    Apples to apples is pretty fun. We played that with friends, along with Cranium. It is probably more fun without children constantly interupting.
