Sugar and Spice
I tidied up my cooking cabinet tonight while cleaning in the kitchen, so I thought I’d share a picture. We’re simple cookers, and only require three shelves of cooking stuff. (I couldn’t figure out the right word for the collective of these items. They’re not supplies, or ingredients…additives? supplements?)
The top shelf is baking supplies - flour, sugar, etc. The middle is sweet treats like sprinkles and cocoa. The bottom shelf is spices. Note: Our most frequently used spices are stuck to the side of the refrigerator with magnets.
I added notes to the photo in Flickr of some of the things in the cabinet that stand out to me. You can see which items they are, and a little more detail by clicking on the photo to open the flickr page and then moving the mouse over it, but here’s the list:
- Swedish pearl sugar
- Splenda
- Tiny tabasco sauce
- Powered sugar shaker
- Swedish powdered vanilla
- Red food dye
- Film container full of parsley
What’s your favorite cooking “stuff” to keep stocked in your kitchen cabinet?

I have entirely too many cooking sauces. Everytime I see some kind of cool, yummy sounding, sauce to add to vegtables, meat, or fish- I have to purchase it. Since my New Years resolution was to start cooking at least 5 meals at home a week, I actually used a ginger and sweet chili one yesterday, on a pork roast. I’m also a sucker for spice blends and seasonings.
Garlic, TexJoy Steak Seasoning Salt, Worcestshire Sauce, Gumbo File, Tabasco, Nutmeg, and Chicken Base or Bouillon Cubes are the most used items at my house.
Gotta always have Lawry’s Seasoning Salt on hand. Even with all the other “cooking stuff” I have, Lawry’s gets used the most on the now-rare occasions that I do cook.
Ew, Splenda. What’s Swedish pearl sugar?
Note to Thomas: I tried to type that as ‘Swedish perl sugar’–I apparently need more coffee before work this morning.
Gorski: It’s the rough sugar that you sprinkle on bulla.
