Otavalo Market
Our second day in Otavalo, we went to the local market. It is supposedly a huge market on Saturdays, but we hit it on a weekday. Still, we had fun, and saw a lot of new sights. I had a few photos, so I decided to post the photos from this day in a new flickr group:
Here are some of my favorite shots.
This local man stopped to rest his feet. He’s wearing a traditional wool poncho. We were warned to not take obvious shots of locals because many will demand money for it, so I took this shot while pretending to get a shot of Thomas.
This is a statue of three locals dancing. It’s placed in the middle of a round a bout. You can see the green mountains in the backdrop.
This is a photo of chickens and guinea pigs (cuy) roasting over coals. Our last night in Quito, Thomas ordered cuy. I tried a bite, but it was too salty for me. He said it was too much effort to find enough meat to make it worthwhile. Check out the flickr group for photos of chicken heads and feet and pigs heads being sold in the market.
We were in town when school let out and the streets were quickly flooded with children in red and blue uniforms. These little girls were skipping down the street.

I love these photos. I liked Otavalo. Thanks for sharing.
I spent as much in Otavalo on a Saturday market as I did on my entire 10 days in Ecuador. And given how cheap things are there, you probably believe me when I tell you I had to purchase two extra bags to bring it all home! Everyone’s Christmas gift came from Otavalo that year… :)
