Fun Monday: My Friend Georgy
On Fun Monday this week, Willowtree asked:
Tell us about your best friend. Particularly things like: where you first met, how long you’ve been friends and why you think you are best friends.
I’m going to tell you about my longest friend, Georgy. She’s a wonderful friend that I don’t get to see very often (she lives in Boston), but I know if I need an understanding ear, I can just give her a call or shoot her an email. She was my Matron of Honor in my wedding.
Georgy and I met in high school in Florida - she was part of my geeky group of friends. She introduced me to the Internet and got me signed onto the local Bulletin Board System (BBS), Dragon World, where we would chat online after school. Random note: Thomas was on that same BBS, though I didn’t know him then as anyone other than just another twerpy online geek.
At the end of my Sophomore year, I moved to North Carolina. Most of my friends faded away, but Georgy wrote me snail-mail to keep in touch. Another random note: I noticed when going through the old letters before her wedding a couple years ago that she had mentioned Thomas in one of them…foreshadowing.
Anyway, as the Internet grew, Georgy kept in touch online - first by connecting to my local-NC BBS from Florida, and then through online journals. Another note: It was on her online journal that Thomas finally tracked me down and Georgy convinced us to meet.
So, what’s so cool about Georgy? No, it’s not her amazing ability to quote more music lyrics than anyone I know. It’s because she’s an intelligent, thoughtful, caring person with a great sense of humor, and she’s not afraid to march to the beat of her own drum.
And, she sends me cool notes like this:
Translation:
Hey there!
I’m just writing to say, well, I’m sorry I haven’t been able to be there with you through the wedding planning process like most Maids of Honor get to be. But I’m available for any support you need that I can provide pre-wedding and most definately during. I can’t wait to be there with you.
Love, Georgy
So, I wonder how long it will take her to notice this post about her. In the meantime, you should check out her bio on her website - she’s quite an interesting person.

What a great friendship, how funny that your husband was interlinked through it as well.
Georgy sounds like a wonderful friend. Friendships are about quality, not quantity, and I think both of you understand that!
Wow, it’s hard to feel deserving of a tribute such as this. *blush* Thanks for all the kind words, but thanks most of all for YOUR friendship, which throughout the years has been fulfilling, engaging and as reliable as a Carabus :-)
