Fun Monday: Favorite Treats

August 12th, 2007 by Sallad

For the Fun Monday this week, Give It a Try asked us to post about our favorite treat. My favorite is cheese - any kind of cheese - slices of munster, cubes of cheddar, cream cheese, cheese dip, cheese balls… But none of the cheese currently in our house is very exciting to photograph, so instead, I photographed Thomas’ favorite treat - Swedish chocolate.

Every time his parents make it to the states, they bring a package of Swedish chocolate for us. I’ll admit that I have become hooked - Marabou is much better than Hersheys, and I’m not really even a sweets person. My favorite flavor is Schweizernot (milk chocolate with hazelnut) and Thomas’ favorite is Frukt and Mandel (fruit and nuts in chocolate).

His parents also send us tubes of mandelmassa (almond paste), but I’m not sure what to do with it. Unfortunately, most of that goes to waste. Thomas also has received a 10-lb Toblerone bar for Christmas for the past 3 years from his parents - not easy to carry on a plane, and not easy to finish. This year, when he brought it home, there was still some of last year’s in the house, so he took the new bar to the office. I’m not sure of the status on it anymore.

As I read about everyone’s snacks, I think, “oh yes, that is my favorite too.” I agree with you cheese is a very tasty snack and usually better than chocolate.

Search Cooks.com for almond paste and you’ll find some delicious sounding recipes to try with the paste. Too good to waste.

Better still, check out Odense.com. It is the manufacturer of almond paste and marzipan, and there are pictures with their recipes.

I agree with mjd…everywhere I go I think, oh, I like that too. We should do a fun monday on stuff we don’t like.

mjd nailed it. Whatever is being served is usually my favorite. Especially if I didn’t have to cook.

the almond paste sounds like something for pastry…????

Now we can get some seriously tasty Cheddar cheese here in UK. Toblerone is my one of my son-in-laws favourite choc bars :)

    Cheese, Grommett!!!
Marzipan (almond paste) makes the best macaroons ever. My kids used to make it into little vegetable shaped cookies.

It all sounds real good, But never heard of it before. I am from the states so i guess we don’t get that good stuff here.

At least they didn’t send you pickled herrings! One of my friends recently gave me some marzipan, and I have no idea what to do with it!

Oh, those are so PRETTY. It almost doesn’t matter what they taste like - except I’ve had them before, and I know, they’re divine. Even though I’m more of a savoury than sweet treat eater.

Toblerone wouldn’t last that long in OUR house! :)

Love, love, love Toblerone! That 10lb bar would be gone in no time here, especially if it was white chocolate, and not because I would be sharing it with my family;o)

HMMM…cheese is my favorite too. But wait, did I read that right…a 10lb bar of Toblerone? 10lbs??? Wow!!

I am not a cheese person, at all! But, I love Swedish Chocolate! My parents brought me some last time they went overseas and I managed to make it last about a week!

I’m a cheese and chocolate freak, too. If I’m in a hotel, and the mini-bar has a Toblerone, it is consumed the first day of my stay. YUM!

I love cheese too, but I don’t usually snack on it. I love swiss chocolate and Toblerone’s are great. I have seen recipes using Toblerone, but not sure where. Same with Almond paste, you can use it in cream fillings or squares. I think you can use any of those things as an ice cream topping. That is a recipe I saw, it was Toblerone fondue. Melt the bar and add some cream, dip cake and whatever. So many options, so little time.

Cheese and chocolate make such a great combo…especially if you add a little red wine to the mix. :)

    Mmmmmm!! Love the chocolate.

Oh, and MOM’s right (ain’t she always!); there are LOTS of great recipes that call for the almond paste!!

Love the Marabou chocolate. We get ours at IKEA. My favourites are the Hazelnut and the Daim.

Melt the toblerone and use it for chocolate fondue - dip pineapple, kiwi fruit, pound cake, raspberries, shortbread. Great dessert.

I love cheese too! And I can’t wait to go back to Sweden to stock up on Marabou, frukt and mandel is my favorite, and the best part, my son doesn’t like that kind, so it’s MINE, all MINE!!!!!!!!!! Almond paste can be used in pastries, but I prefer to eat it raw :) I’m going next month, so I might as well add canned herring to my shopping list……..

Chocolate with hazelnuts is one of my favorite combos. LOVE Anything that says Swiss chocolate.

    Oh, foreign chocolate…now that’s gotta be a rich treat - yum! :)
That reminds me…been a while since I’ve had Toblerone.

Foreign sweets, YUM! I think the only think I’ve had from a foreign country was dehydrated seaweed - it’s better than it sounds - I used to work at a Chinese Restraunt owned by Korean’s, with a Vietnamese Cook and Mexican helpers. Fun :)

Foreign languages are fun too, but I only know a few words here and there.

“mandelmassa” is used in pastries mostly, at x-mas time u slice and roll it into small meatballs and roll it in cocoa powdwer and have it as candy. You can grate it over ice cream or fruit sallad. At easter we have something like hot cross buns where we use the mandelmassa. one of Thomas’s favorite. You cut the top of the bun like a small hat, scoop out the bun so it has a wall . Put some mandell massa and add some wipped cream and the cut off piece and sift some powederd on it and have it as a treat. In my home when I was a kid my mom smushed the inside stuff with almon paste and soften it up a little bit with milk so it got well blended and put it back into the bun and served it in a soup dish with added warm/hot milk in the spring usually from Shrove - Tuesday in February untill Easter. Of cause u can eat it raw just like that if u want or add it into your dough when u do cinnamon rolls.
