Fun Monday: Little White Lies

August 19th, 2007 by sallad

I have a bunch of things still to do tonight, and I’m hoping to get to bed early, so I’m making this entry short. This week on Fun Monday, Uncaring Bear asks:

Share with us a little white lie that you may, or may not, have gotten away with. Perhaps it’s something more sinister than a little white lie - maybe even a deep dark secret that you’ve kept buried for years! All the better! Now’s your chance to get it off your chest and confess: “Yes, I did eat that last slice of cheese cake”, “No, I wasn’t washing my hair that Saturday”, “Those pants do make you look fat”!

My little white lie takes place in college. I was on a first date, and the date wasn’t going so well. The conversation was just not flowing over dinner. After dinner, we went to the bowling alley, and I excused myself to the restroom and called my roommate to help. I asked her to “coincidently” stop by and interrupt our date.

She showed up and brought one our friends, and they hung out with us, keeping the conversation flowing. It was much easier with a group. Needless to say, no romantic relationship started from that date, but the guy and I did remain friends for a while. I don’t know if he ever knew that my friends showing up was not just a coincidence.

I used to organise a friend to call me on the mobile about an hour after the date started. I remember several times answering with “What? Oh no, I’ll be right there!!” before making my emergency getaway to my imaginary disaster.

I thought you were going to say you went to the restroom…and didn’t come back! Your way was a nice way and no feelings got hurt.

Mobiles are so handy how would you have got out of it without one? Thank goodness for modern technology.

Interesting. I like it. Hey, if things aren’t going well on a date, you DID keep from hurting him by lying to his face. Right?

Wow - I white lie with a fairly happy ending! At least no one got hurt. I thought you were going to say that you snuck out the bathroom window!

This seems like a kind act rather than a lie. After all you and your friends did not ditch the date, you just enhanced the date.

Oh - calling up girlfriends for a save is no lie - just relief.

What a useful and sensible strategy. Pity there were so few cell phones when I was dating my ex - would I have had the sense to cal someone to rescue me?

    Meh. Prolly not…

that was tough to do before there were cell phones… so you had to excuse yourself and then climb out the bathroom window.

I never did that. but I knew girls that did.

That has to be one of the nicest ways to get out of a bad date that I’ve ever heard of. And you still got to be friends with the guy.
