Fun Monday: Treasured Artwork

September 17th, 2007 by Sallad

When I first read this week’s Fun Monday request, I groaned when I saw that photographs were ruled out.

Brush off your interview skills. Talk to everyone who lives in your house. I want to know what their, and your, favorite piece of art is in your home. Photographs do not count. If there was a fire in your home, everyone would grab photographs, but what is the non-photographic piece of art you would grab on your way out - and why? (Edit: These don’t have to be paintings - these can be wall hangings, statues, lumps of clay by your child, anything that is artistic expression of some kind EXCEPT photographs.)

I thought Thomas and I only had photographs displayed in our house, but as I started walking around with my camera, I discovered some of the other art that we have hanging up. Thanks SayreSmiles, I’ve learned something about myself from this. :)

Here are some of my favorite art pieces (yes, some could be called photos).

This is a collage of photos that I made for our first year anniversary of dating. It hangs right inside our door and I love to tell guests the stories that go with the photos.

This is a wreath that I made from the filler plants that I saved from bouquets that Thomas brought me. It hangs in our dining room, but it’s starting to get crumbly, so I need to add some fresher filler into it.

This is a wall hanging that my Mother-in-law cross-stitched for us. She made it while recovering from a shattered wrist. It’s sort of a map of Sweden, in a visual iconic kind of way. This hangs in our dining room too.

This is a canvas that hangs over our bed. Thomas took the photo of our favorite camping place in Indiana and then had it printed on a giant canvas.

This is a poster that I got when I interned at the Cannes International Film Festival in 1998. Un Certain Regard was one of their smaller competitions. The poster hangs over the bed in our guest room.

This is a sun catcher that my aunt made me back in college. It matches my bus’ colors. Whenever I moved, it always got special privileges to ride in the “Very Special Fragile Box”. It now hangs in the window next to my sewing machine.

If you’d like to see some of the other artsy items I photographed around my house, I’ve posted them on Flickr.

Oh yeah, Thomas said that his mom’s quilts are his favorite art - particularly a blue marine-themed quilt she made him for his high school graduation.

That is a great array of art. I love your camping spot canvas. What a great idea to do with a photo. I like the bold colours of your mom’s cross-stitch as well. Thanks for visiting me.

you surprised yourself with the truth… you have some fabulous art in your house!!!

I just remembered I have a couple of pieces of stained glass art that my best friends sister made.

I forgot — just didn’t think about it until I read your post

Surprise, surprise, surprise!!!! I am in the process of unpacking my house (we moved this summer) and realized that I have TONS of pictures, but I also have lots of other things that are special to me because they are “art”. Mostly stuff family did, but some other, odd things too. When I realized this, I wondered how many people really see what they live with - that was the impetus behind the question. The fact that I also added to my bits of art recently spurred me to volunteer to host this week. Thanks for participating. I love your collage - I did something similar with pictures of my son from the day he was born. And the bus! We had one and my uncle had one that matched (both blue and white like your suncatcher). There are a lot of memories tied up with that bus. I wish I had one just like it now!

    Nice post and great art!!

In response to your question about the fabric in my orange and green quilt……I had to check out your sushi quilt photo!! The fabric in my quilt is from the 70’s. It has flowers, hearts, clouds and cottages all in bright, primary colors. My mom made a smock top for me out of the fabric when I was in my early teens. Needless to say, this was before I had ever heard of sushi, but I definitely see why you asked the question. It does resemble the fabric in your project.

I really love that photo collage and it’s neat that your romantic hubby hung your camping view above your bed. Oh and I LOVE that bus stainglass. :) Very cool!

I like the idea of the wreath made from fillers from bouquets you’ve gotten that is a great idea. I’ve dried flowers in the past but never thought of making a wreath!

You have some great artwork. I love the canvas over your bed. We are thinking of doing something similar. We would like to take a photo of flying and put it on a large canvas. Then hang it above our bed.

What great treasures! I love the bus. We used to have one when I was a kid. Have you checked out the fabric by Heather Ross? Sounds like you guys come from a very creative family.

I love all of your treasures, the map of Sweden, the photo of the scenic Indiana spot, your photo collage. The wreath of filler plants is very creative.
