The Amphitheater Lake

February 3rd, 2008 by Sallad

My favorite place on the Jekyll trip was the lake behind the abandoned amphitheater. There were so many egrets and herons there that it seemed like some kind of magical secret garden. Thomas and I ended up going there three times in our weekend trip and just sat there, hiding under the trees taking photos.

We saw Great Egrets (the big ones) and Snowy Egrets (the small ones).

And several kinds of Herons. This is a Yellow-Crowned Night Heron. We also saw Black-Crowned, Little Blue, Great Blue, and Green Herons.

We were surprised to see an Osprey.

And we saw a ton of Black and Turkey Vultures. More about them in the next post…

The other birds we checked off at this location included: Double-crested Cormorant, Blue Jay, Anhinga, Hooded Merganser, Pied-billed Grebe, Limpkin, Northern Mockingbird, Yellow-rumped Warbler, and Red-bellied Woodpecker. Oh yeah, and we saw a turtle too.

Wow you saw a lot of birds on your venture! They are lovely! I definitely want to come and play in your area. :)
