Sick of Jekyll Island Photos Yet?
Finally, I am done going through the Jekyll Island Birding photos. I’ll post a few in this entry, but if you want to see the whole kit and caboodle, here are my links:
- More Birding at Jekyll Island (62 photos)
- Clover Discovers the Beach (23 photos)
- The Amphitheater Lake (34 photos)
And if that wasn’t enough, here are Thomas’ photos from the trip:
- St. Simons Island & Andrews Island Causeway (24 photos)
- To Jekyll Island and Back (16 photos)
- Jekyll Island (76 photos)
These are some favorites from the most recent set — yearbook superlative style…
This was my favorite shot that I took on the whole trip. It’s a Little Blue Heron at the Audubon Society Park.
This gull was coming in for a landing, but I thought he looked like he was dancing.
These Grackles were bathing in a puddle and the light was just right to show off their iridescent feathers.
This was a sunken ship in the middle of the beach. I don’t know the story behind it, but it was really odd to come around the corner and see boat masts coming out of the sand.
As I walked under this tree, the squirrel stopped eating his nut and started to wave to me with his hind leg.
This Great Blue Heron was not having a good hair day. Now only was his white boa around his neck blowing in the wind, but his two feathers on top of his head wouldn’t stay down.
This Skimmer was hiding in a flock of seagull, and though he stood out pretty well with his beak, we couldn’t tell exactly what he was until we got home with our guidebooks.
We saw this young bald eagle on our way home from the trip. We thought it was another vulture and didn’t bother taking a photo it, but then I realized it had a white head. I snapped a few quick shots before it flew away, but this is about the best I got. At least I can say I saw a bald eagle.

Nope, not sick of them yet. I’m liking seeing all the birds!
I absolutely love the grackle photo. I am a fan of blackbirds anyway, but the ripples and the drops of water falling from the beak just really make it extraordinary. I hope you don’t mind if I download a copy so I can make a print for my wall?
Great pictures!
I just went to the mountains for the weekend. Unfortunately, my niece stole my camera from me and ran out my battery on a pond of ducks from inside a restaurant and I didn’t have the opportunity to take many more since I forgot my charger.
I miss Jekyll Island. We used to fly there when I was in college and go eat seafood and wander the beach.
We were stationed at King’s Bay for three years and I never went to Jekyll! :(
Your pictures are amazing! Good for you to identify the young bald eagle. It has been great to see them return to Jekyll Island, a nest was established a year or so ago and it looks like they are reproducing!
I grew up going to Jekyll Island every summer since my Grandmother and Great Aunt lived there. I lived there for 3 months in third grade. It was in the winter so the island was mostly deserted. My sister and I had so much fun exploring the beach and the rocks that were there to create sand dunes. Thanks for the pictures! It’s a nice blast from the past! I haven’t been back in years.
