The Great Backyard Bird Count

February 15th, 2008 by sallad

Today is the start of the Great Backyard Bird Count. This event is open to anyone across the country, and it’s easy to participate.  It’s going on through February 18th.

Bluebird on Birdbath

Just pick a spot that you can watch for at least 15 minutes, and record what kind and how many birds you see. This can be your backyard, your bird feeder, or even at a local park. Thomas and I are going to start in our backyard, but I think we might try to join some other birders in a new park later in the day.

After you have IDed your birds, record your results on the website. You can find identification guides and regional checklists online. If you’re in the Georgia area, Thomas has posted some great resources on his site.

Pileated Woodpecker

Sounds pretty easy, huh? If you participate, let me know what you see… I’m sure we’ll have some photos to share later this weekend. The shots in this post were all from our yard this past month.
