Backyard Bird Count Completed

February 18th, 2008 by Sallad

We slept through the bird count Saturday. Sunday morning was overcast and dreary, so we held out waiting for some sun to shine through. Around 3:30, we gave up on the sun and decided to do a quick count as a thunderstorm came rolling in. Luckily we were counting from the dry, warm safety of our living room window. I was surprised that the birds did not mind the rain, especially considering how big a raindrop would be from their perspective.

Anyway, this is what we counted:

  • Mourning Dove - 2
  • Red-bellied Woodpecker - 1
  • Blue Jay - 1
  • Common Raven - 2
  • Carolina Chickadee - 8
  • Tufted Titmouse - 3
  • White-breasted Nuthatch - 3
  • Carolina Wren - 1
  • Northern Mockingbird - 1
  • Eastern Towhee - 4
  • White-throated Sparrow - 3
  • Dark-eyed Junco - 1
  • Northern Cardinal - 4

Thomas took the photo in this post, but he was going to delete it, so I claimed it. This is the first weekend this year that we’ve seen robins in our yard, though none during our count. Thomas says that means Spring is coming. I sure hope he’s right.

Here’s a few more photos from around the yard:
