Slice of Time

June 1st, 2008 by sallad

I’ve been trying to improve my people photography and visiting Thomas’ family last weekend was a great opportunity.  While there, we celebrated his niece’s 3rd birthday, as well as his 30th, and his sister’s 27th.  I got a few good shots on which I tried doing a little edgy editing.  I’ve been admiring the blown out, over-exposed look on some popular blogger’s sites (dooce, pioneer woman, and land of KA) and thought I’d give it a try.

Here’s what I came up with: (click on any image to view bigger in Flickr)

Watching TV On the Couch

They’re not completely like the photos I was trying to model after, but I do like the way they feel like a quick slice of time, almost like a freeze frame of a video, and I think they show emotion.  I made all these edits in Lightroom.  I cropped the photos, then boosted exposure to 1.7 – 2.3, set brightness and contrast to 60+, very high sharpening, lens vignetting, and decreased saturation with increased vibrance.

I can definitely see the Ree “Pioneer Woman” influence. I think they all look great! Especially the bottom two shots. Cinematic is a great descriptor.

I think they look great! And Thomas and his sister sure look alike, don’t they?

I like that look for photos, too. Well, for people photos…not so much the landscapes.

It looks like you’ve got it. I’ve always liked their photos, now I will have to try that.
