Bento Box Quilt

August 19th, 2008 by Sallad

I just wanted to share this quilt that I made last week for my friend Anna. She opened it at her baby shower Saturday, but since I haven’t finished the binding, I took it back and promised to return it before the baby shows up. I’m hoping to finish it this week.

The blocks are made from the Ginger Blossom fabric line by Sandi Henderson. Anna hinted that she didn’t want pastels, and only minimal pink for her baby girl. Green seemed to be her focus color, so hopefully this combination worked.

I kept seeing this quilt pattern, called Bento Boxes, online and wanted to try it out. I found the pattern and it was really easy to follow. It’s basically made up of different lengths of 3 inch strips.

With Thomas’ help cutting and ironing, I was able to finish this up in just a couple of days. I used my machine to sew the quilt top, but I hand-tied the layers together because machine quilting layers still scares me. I was pleased with how it turned out though. I would definately try this pattern again, but I advise going with contrasty colors that have simple designs to see the square on a square pattern clearly.

WOW! All I can say is… WOW! I’ve always wanted to be good with a sewing machine, but don’t see it in my near future. I’m jealous of your skills. This quilt is awesome!

Wow! That is beautiful!! I have not seriously attempted quilting because I too am terrified of machine quilting. Hmm…hand-tying? Now that is do-able.

That is amazing! I really need to learn quilting. You sewed this by hand?? I can’t even imagine. Then again, my sewing machine still scares me, too.

Dotty - I sewed the top patchwork part with my sewing machine, but I quilted (the part where you connect the front, batting and back, by hand. I adjusted the wording in the post to be clearer.

Beautiful quilt! You are so talented and I absolutely love the colors and patterns you chose. Do you ever sell any of your work? I would love to have a quilt like that one day.

Super cute! I love it. And I like that it’s not super contrasty- it makes the quilt a little subtler and baby-appropriate without going the pastel route.

Gorgeous quilt. I think it has the perfect amount of pink.

Quilting layers freaks me out too! So much so, that I haven’t even tried to make a quilt yet. I will though. I have to with all those vintage sheet fat quarters I have.

What kind of camera do you use and where did you get it? Is it terribly expensive? Your photos are beautiful! I linked over from journeymama.

brilliant and so colourful. I was once told, many years ago, that a quilter makes a delibrate mistake to show indicate that the quilter is human - is that true for you too? the mistake is only known by the quilter..

I don’t think you could have picked a better selection of fabric for her - it fits her personality so perfectly. The quilt is amazing and inspiring! Great work!

How do you do those little knots throughout the quilt with the two little strings poking out?

This is gorgeous! The fabric that you used is perfect for a little girl. I’ve been wanting to try the bento box pattern for a while, too.

Hey! I’ve been surfing around looking at diff. bento box quilts as I get ready to piece one. Don’t be scared of machine quilting through all those layers - just get a good walking foot for your machine and a pack of top-stiching needles and go for it!
