Random Birthday Talk
I really don’t have much to post today, so I’ll just share with you what I bought for myself for my upcoming birthday. I got a space in a photography class that goes behind the scenes at the Atlanta Zoo. I’m so excited to photograph the animals close up. Yes, as my SIL pointed out to me, my birthday isn’t for a few weeks, but last year, this class filled up before I was able to register. Now, Thomas and I are registered for the November class. Yay!!
I don’t know how I’m going to celebrate my 30th birthday yet. We’ve got a ton of things going on right around then, so part of me wants to keep it quick and small — maybe just dinner with friends. But then part of me says it’s my 30th birthday, and that’s a milestone, so I wish I could do more. Our friends have mentioned wanting to go camping before it gets cold, but I just don’t think we’ll have the time. :(
Until a couple of months ago, 30 sounded so old - much closer to 40, than to 20. But then I thought about how much I’ve done in the past 10 years - graduated undergrad and grad school, had a blast being social, traveled to 5 foreign countries, adopted a dog, moved away from everyone I knew, worked at 3 jobs, bought a house, got married, hosted my family for the holidays. These aren’t that amazing, but they were big things to me. I can’t wait to see what happens in my 30s!
And now for a little audience participation… What did you do to celebrate your 30th birthday? Was it a big transition time for you? Or if you’re not 30 yet, what do you still want to accomplish before you turn 30? Are you excited about getting older or trying to fend it off as long as possible?

Who cares if your birthday isn’t for a few more weeks — that class sounds awesome! I can’t wait to see the photos.
I still have a few more years until I’m 30. I’d like to have another child before then, establish myself in a job that I love, and finally conquer my sewing machine. Getting older doesn’t really bother me.

For my 30th, I took a solo vacation to Orange Beach, AL - it was the first time I’d ever been to the beach, and it was AWESOME! I turn 40 next year, and, now that I’m married, I guess I’ll have to take my husband with me if I go anywhere ;)

I can’t wait to see the photos from your class!
On my 30th birthday a friend called to wish me happy birthday and I cried. I had to call him back when I “got it together” and apologize. I REALLY wasn’t that bad, I was just being a drama queen. :)

The class sounds great, I can’t wait to see the pictures. I LOVE animals.
I went on a ski trip for my 30th birthday, a bunch of my friends and I went.

I rented a beach house for my 30th birthday and invited everyone I knew. People flew in from all over to come. I think you were invited (or maybe that was the next year). Chris made gumbo. It was awesome.
I was excited about turning 30, but I didn’t do anything extra special. Had lunch with my friends, and dinner with my boyfriend later that weekend. The actual day of my birthday was a day I had to go to class, so that was a bummer, but oh well.

There’s nothing wrong with buying birthday presents in advance! And the class is after you’re birthday, so bah don’t even worry. It’s for you birthday, who cares when you do it. You have accomplished so much in such a short period of time! Turning 30 is something that’s been built up in our society for a long time, so if you want to do more, and feel like you can, go for it. Why not?

For my 30th birthday my kids all went to my moms and I had a sleepover with all the waitresses I worked with. :) It was fun! :)

pretty photos! I’m all about the early birthday presents too :)
I’ve got three years until I’m 30 and I want to pay off my undergrad student loan, finish graduate school, travel to Europe, and start an online craft business. I’d better get cranking :)
To think I cried on my 3oth birthday because I thought I was getting old and that was 56 years ago My Sunday School gave me a surprise party and my step-mother sent the girls and I identical chocheted purses. Turned out to be a good day, but I could mot forget that my beautiful mother had died at the age of 36.
Gorgeous photos. But oh, Lord, you made me feel old! i will turn 36 on the 20th of this month. i would LOVE that birthday gift you gave yourself!
I went to a coffeehouse and enjoyed a concert the weekend before I turned thirty — and got back to discover you’d called about a certain scary LiveJournal post. :) But it didn’t ruin the evening I had.
I also gave myself a trip for my 30th birthday, although I didn’t actually go until I was nearly 31. In my case it was Seattle — a place I’d never been.
That was the big thing that hit me; I realized that I’d gotten into the habit of saying “I’ll do that when…” The problem was that I was in serious danger of becoming the person who never did it because she kept waiting for the right time.
And why not give yourself an early birthday present? There’s nothing wrong with that at all.
I don’t remember doing anything special to celebrate my 30th birthday. I was at home taking care of an 18 month old and thinking about how sad to leave my 20s behind and getting older. Little did I know how very young 30 really is! You’ve gained the wisdom and maturity in your 20s to know how to enjoy the rest of your life like a kid, and you’ve found a soulmate who will be right there doing the same.
That sounds like a great gift to yourself…I can’t wait to see the photos from the zoo!
Let’s see, my 30th birthday? Ummmm, I honestly can’t remember what we did to celebrate, so it must not have been anything too special. Since I’ve had kids with birthdays so closely before mine, my special day sort of gets overlooked because we’re all celebrated out–and often short on cash, too!

Well I have just over 3 years to go to be 30.
I havent thought about what I want to do before then….
-be settled into my house and community
-have a kid or two
and thats about it right now. But who knows what will happen. I never would have thought at age 23 that i would have gotten married and started traveling all over including Europe! so we will see what the next 3 years bring!

The SIL comment was more of you caught us off guard (self included) had us thinking we missed your bday :( It wasn’t meant to be or sound like a “wow, you bought yourself something early.” :)
Back on topic… For my 30th Suzanne threw me a surprise party which actually was a surprise. I would have been happy sitting on my couch but the surprise party was way more fun. To me, 30 was just another birthday, I don’t think I had any feelings/opinions one way or another about reaching that so called milestone.
Those ARE amazing accomplishments for you in the past decade. Congratulations, and happy birthday!
I still have a while before I turn 30, but by then I will hopefully have my Masters degree, buy a house, have gone back to Europe, and be married, possibly with kids. I’ve always wanted that in my twenties. We’ll see what the universe has planned for me though :)
