A House Divided — on online photography sites

September 17th, 2008 by sallad

Thomas and I have a problem and can’t figure out a solution.  Before either of us gives up blogging or photography, I’m turning to you, wise readers, with hopes for some new ideas to consider.

Our problem:  Two photographers got married and now take photos together at the same events.  We want to combine our photos so we’re not publishing two seperate versions at different sites for each event.  However, we cannot agree on how to combine our photos into a joint web gallery. We’re each big fans of competing online photo sites.  Thomas posts his photos on Picasa Web and I post mine on Flickr.

Here’s the main factors:

  • We both want to combine our photos of things we do together.
  • We both keep seperate blogs.
  • We will each often skip taking photos at places where the other is taking photos. For example, if we go to a party and Thomas takes his camera, I will skip bringing mine.
  • Thomas likes the following features on Picasa - face recognition, large thumbnails, full-sized image previews, simple viewing interface.
  • Dallas likes the following features on Flickr - groups, comprehensive search, Picnic editing, easy comment viewing, photos show up in Google search.
  • Thomas does not want to lose his Picasa friends or comments and would be shamed by his coworkers if he used Flickr.
  • Dallas does not want to lose her Flickr contacts or comments.
  • Thomas uses Picasa to post photos to his blog, share with friends/family, keep an archive.
  • Dallas uses Flickr to post photos to her blog, share with friends and family, meet other photographers/bloggers, get photo/craft inspiration, keep an archive.
  • Thomas does not like Flickr because it shows tiny images and requires lots of clicks to navigate.
  • Dallas does not like that Picasa shows photos only by album, does not allow photos in new tabs.
  • We often share each other’s cameras and occassionally edit each other’s photos.
Please help, or you’re going to see a lot more pictureless posts like this. :(

If neither of you want to lose your accounts on those sites, then the only solution is to keep them separate. Right? I’ve used both and prefer Flickr, if that counts as a vote either way. :)

[...] A perceptive person might notice that 3 of the 4 above photos are on Flickr rather than Picasaweb. This is something my wife and I are trying to work out. [...]

Ok… I’m a flickr user. But only because that is what I came across first. And now I don’t want to deal with switching. Also my photography website was designed to feed through specific flickr folders for easy access. BUT, I just checked out Picasa for the first time and I LOVE the full size images. Its really easy to move around. Flickr wasn’t nearly as user friendly when I started using it. But I see your dilemma with losing your contacts and comments! That is a tough decision! I’d say picasa though, mostly because I’m a google person (gmail/blogger/reader/analytics/calendar) so its only reasonable for me to side with the google web album site. Sorry Dallas. :-)

I’m no help, but I sympathize.

Come on, you guys are resourceful. Can’t Thomas build an app where you can create a new event — say, Indiana weekend — and then pull in the photo feeds from Picasa and Flickr respectively, then post the link to the photo app on your respective blogs? That way, you’re combining the presentation of your photos while still managing them on the backend the way you both prefer. If you both want to stay happy on this, you might have to still publish your photos on separate sites, but at least you’ll have a conduit for displaying them together to the public.

@Georgy: This was one of the ideas I proposed actually, and not all that difficult to implement. It’s just a matter of getting the freetime to hack at code. =)

I am a creature of habit. I stumbled across Flickr, and so that’s what I use. I’d never have the time/patience to move everything somewhere else where I’d have to learn all over again!

I have to say, I’m glad you’re trying to come up with a compromise. I’d just insist that DH move to Flickr :-)

What a dilemma! Couldn’t you each keep your own blogs for individual posts then do a combined blog where you take turns posting or whatever but you each keep flickr/picasa? Luckily hubs and I both use flickr. But he maintians our newdae blog and I give him my photos to chose between all photos. My blog is just mine, occasionally I ask him to use one of his and give him credit.

Sounds to me like Thomas has a new project to work on .. some sort of tool which lets you use both sites. I use Picasa, but wish I could group albums together (which you can’t) and wish I could use a tag for a whole album rather than having to tag one photo at a time.

flickr all the way. no question about it.
i love it, it’s easier to browse through, faster, more group/comment support so you can get feedback..

I had the same idea as Georgy when I read your post and hope that Thomas can find time to do his magic. :)
